Become a 2025 Instructor or Intern!

   Junior Sailing Instructors   

We are currently hiring instructors for the 2025 Jr Sailing season.

This is a competitively paid position.

The Junior Sailing Instructors will assist the Head and Assistant Head Sailing Instructors
in the running of the Jr Sailing program and it's facilities.

They help with on and off-the-water instruction during camps, with maintenance of the sailing area,

club equipment and boats, and support the head and assistant instructors in their jobs.


   Jr Sailing Interns   

Want to learn how to become a Jr Sailing Instructor?
Jr Sailing Interns gain on-the-job experience needed to become a Jr Sailing Instructor!

There is no pay, but work hours can be used towards community service hours.

The  Interns assist with maintenance of the sailing area,

boats and equipment, and support the Jr Sailing instructors
in the day-to-day running the Jr Sailing program.

   Position Overviews for Junior Sailing Instructor (And Instructor Internship)   

The Bow Mar Yacht Club is seeking enthusiastic and qualified Sailing Instructors to teach youth sailors ages 6-18 during our summer sailing program. We are looking for passionate individuals who can create a safe, fun, and educational learning environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Teach sailing skills to children and teenagers across multiple skill levels

  • Implement daily lesson plans for different age groups

  • Ensure student safety at all times on and off the water

  • Perform routine maintenance of boats, sailing equipment and area

  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, and program staff

  • Conduct pre-sailing safety briefings and equipment checks

Minimum Qualifications for Instructors

  • Must be at least 15 years old

  • CPR and First Aid Certification

  • Colorado Safe Boating Card - https://www.boat-ed.com/colorado/

  • Ability to swim at Red Cross Level 5 or equivalent 

  • Have taken at least one summer of Advanced Sailing

  • Pass background check

Minimum Qualifications for Interns

  • Must be at least 12 years old

  • Have taken at least one summer of Advanced Sailing

Preferred Qualifications for Instructors

  • Current US Sailing Level I Instructor Certification

  • Previous youth teaching experience

  • Lifeguard certification

  • Competitive sailing background


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift boats and equipment (up to 50 pounds)

  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Strong physical stamina

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly rate (Internship is unpaid)

Head Instructor - 

Eva  Rossell



We are excited to have Eva Rossell back again this summer leading our Jr Sailing program! This will be Eva's third summer as Head Instructor of the Bow Mar Jr Sailing Program. Eva graduated from Michigan State University where she raced on the MSU Sailing Team, where she was team captain and Commodore. She grew up sailing on big lakes in Michigan, learning to sail in Opti's and later graduating to Lasers, 420s and FJs. She has won multiple awards over the years, racing for Bayview Yacht Club and Grosse Pointe South High School. She is also an experienced big boat racer and has competed in keelboat races in multiple states. Here are some highlights from Eva's resume:

Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit MI - Assistant Head Coach. Taught introductory racing to children on Optimists. Adult Learn to Sail Instructor. Junior Sailing Instructor. Coached advanced level 420 jib and main racers and Laser sailors. Developed and practiced advanced curriculum and drills to enhance the skills of the sailors, resulting in multiple sailors achieving high rankings within their fleet at weekly regattas.
